Ongoing Advocacy
May 4, 2018
During the first few months of 2018, we continued to advance our members' interests by meeting with regulators, appointed and elected officials and public opinion leaders on priority issues.
Safety Leadership
Safety Committee Co-Chair Kirk Regular presented to the Safety Services Manitoba Conference. We also launched our "Members Only" portal on our website for current Mine Rescue manuals and other safety materials.
Climate
MAMI staff and representatives of member companies met with Manitoba Sustainable Development's Deputy Minister Rob Olson and senior department staff regarding implementation of the Made-in-Manitoba Climate Plan. The province has committed to a facility-by-facility approach and does not want to sacrifice competitiveness or risk carbon leakage because of the plan.
Indigenous Relations
MAMI's Indigenous Relations Committee held its spring meeting in the main floor meeting room at the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) building. MMF Chief of Staff Mr. Al Benoit gave an informative presentation on the Metis Nation and how the Nation wants to be engaged by industry and consulted by the Crown.
Andrea attended the Assembly of First Nation's Lands & Resources meeting held in Winnipeg. Participants discussed (among other topics) how they can advance their agenda within the current legal and constitutional framework.
MAMI staff and leaders met with Jim Downey and other representatives of the Province's First Nations Protocol committee. Mr. Downey shared the seven themes that have emerged from their meetings with First Nations.
Mining and the Manitoba Economy
Andrea attended the first Look North roundtable on Mining and Other Resources in Thompson as the Lead for the "Northern Minerals and Other Resources" Joint Action Group. The Look North Steering Committee will be presenting their report to the Province in June 2018.
