(MAMI) was originally established in 1940 as the Mid-west Metal Mining Association and has represented the interests of the mining industry in Manitoba on a continuous basis since that time. MAMI currently represents all operating mines in the province as well as most firms conducting mineral exploration projects in Manitoba.

The objectives of MAMI are as follows:
  • To inform members of existing and proposed laws, regulations and policies that affect the mining industry and the requirements for compliance with same,
  • To work with the various provincial and federal government agencies involved in regulatory and licensing processes that affect the mining industry in Manitoba in order ensure the establishment of laws that are unambiguous, environmentally efficient, and encourage the development of a competitive, profitable, safe and environmentally sustainable mining industry,
  • To advance the general welfare of the mining industry in Manitoba through the promotion of technical innovations in the fields of health and safety, waste disposal, environmental protection and metallurgical research and development,
  • To undertake public educational and informational activities that enhance the image and well-being of the industry in Manitoba, and
  • To promote a collaborative and cooperative approach to the advancement of the industry in Manitoba among member firms, key stakeholders, and the public at large.
MAMI is governed by a Board of Directors that is comprised of firms in the mining industry that employ greater than 50 employees. All member companies are entitled and encouraged to participate in MAMI's policy development committees that develop a common industry position on issues that is recommended to the Board of Directors. Working committees include an Exploration Committee, Environment Committee and Taxation Committee.

The Association also comprises the Mines Accident Prevention Association of Manitoba (MAPAM). MAPAM was founded in 1962 to meet the rising need to provide safety and consulting services to the rapidly expanding mining industry. MAPAM's mandate is to promote and implement leading-edge accident prevention actions and programs, and assist in workers compensation management for its members.
